Montenegro Churches, Monasteries and Mosques

Centuries of severe struggle for survival have left their trace on a great number of sacral monuments on the territory of Montenegro.Living his martyr life, the Montenegrin man has mainly depended on the disposition of the sea, sun, dry land and the power of the enemy. Since he wasn’t granted with earthly richness, he granted his soul to religion.

The Cetinje Monastery 'www.visit-montenegro.com'The Montenegrin people built churches as memorials or as monastic obligations to God. The churches, moderate by size, were a reflection of the people believing and understanding faith as a will of God and their own effort to follow it. If the churches could shine at night, the territory of Montenegro would seem as if densely sparkled with stars.

In this region the people of Montenegro have confessed three religions for centuries: Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim.

Their history is centuries long and full of peaceful living together, cooperation and respecting of differences. But, as well as the other European nations the people of Montenegro have also had bloody periods of mutual battles. The history of this region has left a message that on such a small geographic territory, in spite of the national and religious differences and problems, people of all three confessions can live together and Montenegro is their mutual faith, granted by God.
