Banja
Vrujci - Vrujci Spa
Banja Vrujci (Vrujci Spa) is situated
in the southwest of Serbia, at the height from 179 to
252 m above sea level.
In a valley, located among scenic hills,
at the foot of the air spas pf Divcibare and Rajac,
the Vrujci Spa can be found. It is only 92 kilometers
from Belgrade. It is located between Mionica and Ljig.
It is well known for its medicinal
character. Traces of material culture and popular tradition
show that the region around the Vrujci springs was inhabited
since ancient days.
Therapeutical
Features at Vrujci Spa
The people of these parts still remember the
legend of the originating of the Vrujci Spa. It says
that during the time of the "Austrian War",
in 1914, the enemy army took all the local horses with
it during retreat. All but one.
That one was so weak and exhausted
from illness that he could not even walk, and so he
was left to die near a thermal spring. He lay in the
mud for a while, drank water from the fountain and so
got well quickly. His shabby coat of hair grew thick
once more and the horse returned by himself to his owner,
strong and well. The word of the medicinal water thus
spread quickly and after WWI preparations began to turn
the springs of health into property all the people could
use.
SPRINGS OF THE VRUJCI SPA
The source of the Vrujci Spa medicinal
water has five main and several lesser springs connected
by drains. The medicinal water springs from the mud
and loose soil on an area approximately 200 m long and
about 60 m wide.
The ground was bored, and the main
borehole is right next to the adapted baths. The temperature
of the water is 26°C upon average. The water is distributed
from there to all the facilities of the Spa. At the
exit to the bore hole the water flows through the mounted
pipes at a flow rate of about 60 liters per second.
In the immediate vicinity of the main
borehole there is a shallower borehole, 16 meters deep.
Its water used to be directed to a fountain with three
taps, 3 cm in diameter, from which the water flowed
freely. The visitors of the spa drank the water to treat
stomachs and kidney stones, as well as ophthalmologic
diseases. The old fountain has been replaced and the
water is directed to a new, large fountain.
Part of the beneficial source has been
canalled and it leads the water to the Toplica River.
The canals pass through the facilities of the spa complex,
and visitors frequently spend time in them.
At the "Vojvoda Misic" baths
thermal water naturally flows in a strong stream from
the bottom of the men's and women's pools, constantly
filling them. During the season, the water in the pool
is changed naturally every two hours.
The
Vrujci Spa has water of remarkable abundance, ranging
from 60-820 liters per second, with an average of 200
l/s of water, which places it at the first place among
the spas of Yugoslavia.
The thermal water of the Vrujci Spa
is used:
- for filling the recreational pools,
- for treatments by drinking and bathing;
- for making medicinal mud;
- it is taken home by inhabitants of the nearby villages,
- visitors take it to their towns by cars and buses;
- for hygienic bathing and other uses in hotel rooms;
- for the needs of the hotel kitchen, bakery, restaurants,
special bathtubs and for heating the spa facilities.
Because of the impossibility of complete exploitation
with the existing infrastructure of the Spa, large quantities
of thermal water remain unused for now.
